Past work – Baltic

Baltic Galley, Gateshead

2002

With Ellis Williams architects James Macdonald Wright worked as part of the architectural team that designed the external envelope of the Baltic Gallery in Gateshead. The project involved stripping the interior from the original flour silo structure and inserting a new structure to tie the outer walls back together.

Much of the external brickwork was carefully repaired and cleaned and then Corten steel and glass insertions were made to complete the external envelope. The roofs of the gallery and riverside building were topped with a well-insulated double skin aluminium paneled roof. The building is serviced with a combined heat and power plant.
