The 230m2 four storey Victorian terraced house was significantly remodelled to create a family home with an integrated jewellery workshop. A double height aperture was created in the rear wall of the house to bring light down into the workshop space at lower ground floor level. Key to the success of this design was opening up and landscaping of the middle courtyard to help form a series of layered views through the house.
Roofs, floors and part of the external walls were well insulated and new glazing was added with high thermal performance. Domestic hot water is provided using solar evacuated tubes and space heating utilises a weather compensating boiler linked to fully programmable underfloor heating.
Materials include Welsh slate roofing, Douglas fir flooring, limestone tiles and zinc cladding with all works completed by ecological building contractor Ebcobuild based a few streets from the site.
